Independence — an underrated ask at workplace

I have interviewed many people for my startup and during my work experience with previous companies.

When I make up my mind about hiring someone, I deliberately explain them about the work or the nature of job they can expect in the company. Perhaps no one has ever noticed the word “independence” in the whole process. It goes unnoticed and I witness it going unnoticed.

Sometimes it makes me think if the industry is impacting people in such a way that the “independence” is not even an ask from these great minds. Industry is generating more of pattern followers than folks who are creators. People are just content in what they are doing as part of the existing 9 to 5 jobs. No one ask if they can get to experiment with new tools or technologies? No one asks how is failure handled in my organisation? Can I question existing process or practices?

Independence shouldn't be a privilege but a bare minimum necessitity at the work place to be a knowledge worker.
