“We all need people who will give us feedback. That’s how we improve.”
– Bill Gates

In TestVagrant, we try to give feedback to most of the candidates who come for interview. Is it even necessary to do that? Why should we even spend time on candidates when we are not hiring them? There are many other questions on similar lines which questions why we should even give feedback. Is it important?

I believe feedback is necessary when we care about anything be it a process, product, service or human.

At TestVagrant, almost every day we have couple of interviews scheduled primarily for SDET/Sr. SDET positions. These folks take their time out to drop in to our office and attend the in-person interview. We have a basic coding round (to check on the programming skills) followed by a technical round. We tend to give feedback to each and every candidate who come for interview. The feedback on what to learn, what should be the level of their exposure having worked in IT industry for x years of experience, what should be their focus of learning apart from the solutions to the technical questions we have asked. I have personally felt that it’s helpful to give them constructive feedback which helps them stay motivated even when they couldn’t make it to the role. It helps them bond with people and see us as a fellow QAs and not really as any employer. Feedback actually boosts their self-esteem and help them understand the fact that they short of certain skill-set and not really rejected per se.

Being a part of this IT industry I can crib that I am not getting good folks to hire or I can fix by helping people by giving them constructive feedback. I am doing my bit to change the interview system.
